Studio Moodism expands from fit out construction to bespoke furniture
Michael Villardo, founder and CEO of Philippine-based Studio Moodism, has leveraged his experience in interior fit-out construction to enter the bespoke furniture market. The company designs and manufactures custom pieces for residential and commercial interiors, combining functionality with design innovation.
Villardo, who spent nearly 30 years in garment manufacturing, applied his expertise in contour, fit, and material handling to furniture design. “My background in denim—understanding contour, fit, and how fabric needs to embrace the body—never left me. I just apply that thinking differently now. I still shape form around comfort. I’ve simply switched materials,” he said.
Studio Moodism was founded after Villardo observed limitations in off-the-shelf furniture for high-rise urban homes, where space and ergonomics are critical. Custom-built pieces allow precise integration into interiors, maintaining both aesthetics and operational functionality.
During the pandemic, Villardo maintained all 35 employees by creating interim revenue streams, demonstrating operational resilience and continuity in the construction and fit-out business. Studio Moodism has exhibited at Manila FAME for three consecutive years, showcasing designs at international furniture fairs to promote Filipino craftsmanship.
The company integrates local materials and techniques, collaborating with Filipino weavers using Yakan and Inabel textiles. Its latest lighting line incorporates discarded shells from Cebu oysters, combining sustainability with luxury.
Studio Moodism’s portfolio now includes the Velaris lobby project for Robinsons and Hong Kong Land, where Villardo successfully replaced proposed imported Italian furniture with locally produced pieces.
The company is expanding internationally under the Design Philippines banner and is launching its first outdoor collection with weather-resistant frames and performance fabrics. A flagship showroom in Bonifacio Global City is also planned to support direct client engagement and commercial fit-out projects.
